Protect your floors from moisture with damp resistant underlay
Moisture in your home can have negative consequences, causing damage to your underlay, flooring and potentially affecting your furnishings. Dampness is more likely to affect your home if you have a cold, solid ground sub-floor, such as concrete or stone.
Moisture and damp can damage all types of floors, particularly wooden and laminate flooring.
To protect your underlay and flooring from moisture, these types of floors should always have a DPM (damp proof membrane) installed before any flooring. Choose an underlay that has a built-in vapour barrier to protect your flooring from any moisture issues.
Remember that the gold/silver barrier must be face down when you are fitting an underlay with a moisture barrier. The top of the seams should be securely sealed using an appropriate vapour proof tape. We recommend Vapour Tape as this utilises a damp proof membrane also.
Very specific flooring underlay is required to optimise the efficiency of underfloor heating over solid, cold sub-floors. The underlay must be thin enough to allow the heat to effectively travel through as well as being moisture resistant. Underlays with a low tog rating and a DPM are perfect for underfloor heating on a concrete or stone sub-floor.
By taking the proper precautions and investing in the right moisture resistant underlay and products, you can ensure that your home stays dry and free from any moisture damage.
When it comes to the best underlay products for moisture protection, we recommend Timberhush 3mm Gold Underlay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why protect your floors with damp-resistant underlay?
Damp-resistant underlays will prevent moisture and dampness from rising from your concrete subfloor and damaging your flooring and furnishings – dampness is more likely to occur in your home if you have cold subfloors, such as concrete floors.
All of our underlays for concrete floors feature a damp-proof membrane, which acts as a moisture barrier between concrete subfloors and your carpet, wood or laminate flooring.
If your old underlay is ineffective against dampness, or you’re searching for effective moisture protection before laying your new floor, you’ve come to the right place – speak to our experts today on 020 8037 6557 for tailored advice.
Can I use damp-resistant underlay with underfloor heating?
Certainly – many of our damp-resistant underlays are a great choice for concrete subfloors with underfloor heating systems.
The underlay types suitable for underfloor heating have a low tog rating, meaning they offer less thermal insulation – this is necessary as more heat from your underfloor heating system can pass through your underlay and your flooring, into your home.
As well as their suitability for use with underfloor heating, they also feature a damp-proof membrane that prevents moisture and dampness from reaching your flooring, and potentially damaging it.
As always, be sure to check the individual product pages to make sure this particular underlay is suitable for your needs.

How much underlay for concrete floors do I need?
As obvious as it may seem, how much underlay you require is dependent on the area of the room you plan on installing it in.
If your room is rectangular, simply multiply the length and width of the room together to work out the area, and ultimately how much underlay you’ll need – this equation is standard across all underlays and flooring, regardless of the type. Or, to make your life much easier, you can even use our handy room area calculator.
