When buying PU carpet underlay there are some really important points to remember to look out for, so you get the right product.
There’s a few specifications to look out for when choosing PU underlay from Cloud 9.
1) PU Density.. Look for this figure,with Cloud 9 Domestic its 101kg/m3 where as the Contract is 160kg/m3, so for example if you are comparing Cloud 9 Cumulus 11mm vs Tredaire Dreamwalk 11mm you will see Dreamwalk has a 110kg/m3 density against Cloud 9 which has a 101kg/m3 density.
But what does this mean? Higher the density, more underlay underfoot.
Great but how does that effect me? There is a “sweet” spot in density for the home, typically between 100-125kg/m3, go to low at 75 and 80 as some budget underlays are and performance, feel and longevity take a real hit, go too high and they will feel very hard underfoot.
2) Tog Rating… Simply like your Duvet they all have numbers, carpet underlay varies between around 0.5tog to over 3 tog, higher the number, the warmer and more insulating it will be but remember, its really too good at insulating to put on underfloor heating.
3) Thickness… Luxury feel tends to be at the 11mm mark, although remember to check the density of the product when comparing. For example a 12mm underlay with a 90kg/m3 density will not be as good as an 11mm underlay with a 110kg/m3 density.
4) Sound insulation (db rating)… PU underlays are great at deadening foot fall noise,got kids stomping around then this is the product for you. Again,check out the db rating,anything 40 and above is great!
Cloud 9 Roll Size
The most popular Cloud 9 roll size, when laid out is 15m2 (11m x 1.37m), but it can be purchased in quantities of smaller multiples, for example sqaure meters, we simply cut off a roll or full rolls. That means you don’t need to over-purchase.
When rolled up, prior to fitting, the roll measures approximately 1.37m x 0.4m and weighs between 14kg and 24kg per roll.
We allow you to purchase by the individual square meter, which means you can save money not having buy more than necessary. However, it’s also important to consider buying slightly more for wastage reasons.
Best Cloud 9 Thickness
The thickness of cloud 9 underlay ranges from as low as 6mm to as high as 11mm. Generally, if you’re laying your new carpet in your bedroom or lounge, you might opt for a thicker product.
However, if you’re looking to lay it in areas where there’s a lot of curves to contend with, such as the stairs, then carpet fitters would usually prefer a thinner product of approximately 9mm-10mm.
