Heat Insulating Carpet Underlay
Frequently Asked Questions
Because of its insulating quality, this type of underlay is specifically designed to retain heat within your room.
Carpet underlays come with a variety of additional benefits:
· Noise reduction
Carpet underlay adds another layer between your carpet and your sub-floor, which effectively muffles any sounds. The level of this reduction depends on the underlay you choose.
· Increased comfort
The sub-floor beneath your carpet is often constructed from wood or concrete. This makes even the softest carpet hard under the foot. Carpet underlays are usually around 10mm thick, therefore this additional layer increases the comfort of your carpet.
· Maintained appearance
Not only does a carpet underlay make your carpet feel comfier, it also maintains the look of your carpet for longer. This is because instead of being pushed into a solid sub-floor when stepped on, your carpet is cushioned by the underlay.
The heat insulating carpet underlay best suited to your home depends on your requirements and your budget.
For example, if your budget is on the smaller side, Luxury 8 PU carpet underlayis a good low cost option. 8mm thick with a 1.9 tog rating, this carpet underlay provides a great degree of comfort.
If you’re after a more eco-friendly option, the Wilson’s Wool Fibre Rich Felt carpet underlays could be the answer. Made from 100% recycled fibres, the 28oz option has a 1.2 tog rating and is 8mm thick, providing a great amount of insulation for your home. You could even opt for the 42 oz option, which has an impressive 3.4tog rating and 10mm thickness.
Or perhaps sound proofing is high on your priority list alongside heat insulation. In this case, Super Velvet Wool & Crumb carpet underlay will prove to be a great addition to your home. With an impact rating of 48dB – much higher than other options, this underlay has excellent sound proofing qualities.
To put this soundproofing quality into perspective, noises ranging from 40-60dB are classed as ‘moderate’ noises, they aren’t harmful but are annoying – e.g. the noise within a quiet library.
If you’re still unsure as to which carpet underlay is best suited to your home, we’re happy to advise. Simply get in touch.
Although your carpet fitter will be able to install your heat insulating underlay for you, it is also a straightforward task you can do yourself.
If you choose to lay your underlay yourself, here are the steps to do so:
Step one
Before even ordering your heat insulating carpet underlay, you should make sure to accurately measure the space. We would also advise you add an extra 50-100mm per edge.
Step two
Now you’ve received your underlay, clear your space of any furniture. You should also brush away or hoover up any debris and dust as this could cause bumps beneath your underlay.
Step three
Lay one row of your underlay out then trim this to the right length – it should reach your grippers.
Step four
Lay out another row next to the row you have just rolled out making sure they don’t overlap.
Step five
Tape these two rows together using carpet tape.
Step six
Repeat steps four and five until the whole floor space is covered.
Step seven
Your underlay can then be stapled to the gripper. If you’re laying your carpet underlay on top of concrete, you should use an adhesive rather than staples.
We understand you’ve probably got a budget you wish to stick to. That’s why we supply heat insulating underlay at prices to suit every budget.
Our more expensive carpet underlays are available for £7.99 per square metre (excluding VAT) with more budget friendly options available for as little as £2.27 per square metre.
To put this into perspective, the average living room in the UK is around 17square metre. This means you would pay £135.83 for our most expensive heat insulating carpet underlay.
Choosing a lower cost carpet underlay doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sacrificing quality. Instead, it means your carpet underlay has been made from more affordable materials.
If you’ve chosen a slightly more affordable carpet, you could potentially splurge slightly when it comes to your overlay, increasing the levels of comfort.
